SkillUp’s Breaking Barriers Series: UpSkill Your Way to Your Dream Job

Jan 16, 2021

The job market has changed dramatically in the last 12 months. The pandemic turned things upside down that were already wobbly.

10 months ago, COVID-19 ripped through the United States. In a short time span, the pandemic flipped the economy upside down. This resulted in tens of millions of workers losing their jobs and a wide range of businesses having to close their doors for good. Despite this unforeseen devastation, there are industries that have continued to grow — and even thrive — as the pandemic continues to batter the job market. Healthcare, tech, and business are just a few of the stable industries that are growing fast.

Healthcare, tech, and business are stable and growing

These industries are looking to immediately fill hundreds of thousands of jobs and will create millions of jobs in the near future that will require skills that are often found in workers with frontline experience. Jobs in these fields are in-demand and there are many ways to get your foot in the door without necessarily having a four-year degree. These growing sectors have more job openings than there are currently qualified workers to hire. With organizations such as Microsoft and Google committing to hire more workers based on skills versus a college degree, more roles that traditionally required a four-year education can be accessed through upskilling.

High-growth roles are accessible and frontline worker skills align with them

• Frontline workers in industries such as hospitality, retail, and customer service are equipped with skills such as flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to work under pressure in fast-paced environments. Employers in high growth industries (such as healthcare and tech) seek these kinds of skills as these industries are rapidly evolving

• Healthcare, tech, business are rapidly growing and will continue to for the foreseeable future

• With access to upskilling and skill-building programs, frontline workers have a competitive advantage to break into these industries with the skills they have already acquired

• Though there is a shortage of skilled workers, having a roadmap and clear path from how to get from point A to point B through reskilling is an area of opportunity that the SkillUp coalition is committed to bridging — for you.

This series will share insights and best practices for how to build a plan to reskill and shift into one of these growing industries, how to uncover the best role suited for your background and interests, and how to stay motivated and have a support system through peer coaching and peer support. You can expect to see real stories of workers who have utilized reskilling to break into new careers and insight from SkillUp team members on how to best utilize SkillUp to break into your next career.

Career Change Spotlight: Tony

When Tony Boswell, 50, realized his 14-year career of long haul trucking was netting him losses and high overhead costs to maintain his truck and keep his business afloat, he realized it was time to make a change. Tony applied for an online certification course to learn software development and through scholarships, he was able to complete his certification and switch fields into computer programming in six months. With flexible learning options that online training allows, Tony was able to master his new trade and land a role with a software development company in less than a year. His success story is one proof point that reskilling can provide a fast track to a specialized career and it is never too early or too late to start.
