How to Use Feedback to Your Advantage in the Workplace

Oct 12, 2022

Constructive feedback in the workplace can clarify expectations, help you learn and build confidence, and support clear communication. If you struggle with receiving feedback, you are not alone! It can be hard to listen with an open mind, but it is important to remain calm and not respond in a defensive way. Being receptive and open-minded can help you receive feedback and move forward!

The First Step to Receiving Feedback is Accepting It

Remember that feedback is intended to help you improve. Accepting feedback lets you gain a new perspective on how people see your work. Being mindful of your own defenses is important to accepting feedback. Your first instinct might be to snap back and defend yourself. Instead, consider pausing and reflecting without responding right away. Try taking time to explore their point of view with an open mind. You may discover that your colleague or boss has valid points and you can learn from their perspective.

Reflect and Respond with Empathy

Whenever someone gives you feedback, take notes so you can remember the conversation and can follow up. With introspection and reflection, you can start to develop thoughtful follow-up questions. You can then set up a follow-up meeting to ask your questions and gain additional perspective. During these conversations, it’s always important to remember to be empathetic. This is also a great time to remember your strengths and gain confidence in what you do well. Don’t forget to ask for positive feedback as well!

Always Take Action

You have control over your next steps and how you want to move forward, so remember to make changes that will benefit you. Set up regular meetings to follow up on feedback. Ask your supervisor for support in setting goals that can improve your performance. Finally, continue to take time for introspection, reflecting on how you can continue to grow and realize what your strengths are.
